Seven Things to Know about Moving Companies
1) Beware a low estimate-it might not be all it seems. A very low estimate for moving might be a sign of a scam. The scam involves a company refusing to unload your items until you agree to a higher fee.2) The company should make a house call. Most legitimate moving companies will send a representative to your home to assess the move. A refusal to do so might be a warning sign.
3) Movers must tell you your rights. You should receive a pamphlet title something like “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”.
4) Movers must be registered. Interstate movers must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Movers in Texas must register with TxDOT. Check information about moving companies by going to www.ProtectYourMove.gov.
5) It may be better to pay for packing. If you pack, it will be more difficult to establish a claim for a damaged item.
6) Insurance is usually paid by the pound. Items of particular value, such as antiques or family treasures, will only be covered up to 60 cents per pound per article. This often doesn’t cover the full value. Ask about full-value protection.
7) Report any loss or damage promptly. For interstate moves, you have 9 months to make a written claim. For intrastate moves its 90 days.
